There are festivals all over the Olympic Peninsula in the summer and fall, and Sequim doesn’t miss out on the action! The two festivals Sequim is most known for is the Irrigation Festival and the Lavender Festival.
Sequim is known as the Lavender Capital of North America, for good reason! This year Sequim will be celebrating the 15th annual Lavender Festival during the July 15-17 weekend. The festival includes a tour of the local lavender farms, and a street fair with live music and entertainment, local farmers and merchants, lots and lots of lavender, and more! Because Sequim is cradled in the “Rain Shadow” of the Olympic Mountain range, the lack of rain drove early pioneer settlers of Sequim to design and build irrigation ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River to the parched prairie of what is now the city of Sequim. This started the tradition of what is now the oldest running Festival in Washington State: this year celebrated the 116th annual Irrigation Festival on the week May 6th – 15th. This week long festival includes the traditional festivities such as the Logging Show, the Strongman competition, the Art Show, the carnival, the open aire market, the pageant, and of course, the Grand Irrigation Festival Parade.
